Movies are back this year

Sun Sep 27, 2009, 12:09 AM
I'm always looking for new good SciFi and District 9 was just that. Its kind of a ripoff of Alien Nation and Halflife 2, but who gives a damn. It was done very well and had an interesting thing going with its Mockumentary style of filming and cool set design. Apparently it was made on a small budget but I couldn't tell, the concept art and special effects were spot on. I think the key these days to good special FX is slashing the budget in half, that way the director realizes he has to have a good story and good cinematography. This movie was everything Transformers 2 (worst movie of all time) was not.

Also just saw Surrogates, which, while not being good, was enjoyable and had some potential. Almost everything was done well, but I guess the problem was I didn't care about the main characters. Cool movie anyway.

Inglorious Bastards is the best thing I've seen this year. Quintin Tarantino is magic with dialogue, jokes, and raging violence. This movie might be as good as Pulp Fiction, but I got to see it a few more times. I can usually tell when a movie is classic by the 4th viewing.

  • Reading: A Short History of Nearly Everything (Bill Bryson)
  • Watching: Discovery Channel
  • Playing: Sims 3, Unreal Tournament 3, lots of 3's
  • Eating: Graham Cracker Honeycomb (ya they combined the two
  • Drinking: everything

I'm currently a freelance illustrator with emphasis in digital painting. I've got a small community of Deviants here whose work I admire.

I like other artists. Anyone who chooses to paint still lifes, draw Batman, photograph sunsets, write poetry, or design spaceships is just an interesting being. Especially when they could be out doing productive things like making money, going on dates, or downing a Belgian beer. But they would rather be weird and for that, I salute them.

When is the next great Science Fiction Epic coming out? Hopefully James Cameron's Avatar will be just that. Terminator Salvation= no good, especially compared to the first two. Science Fiction and Comedy are my favorite movie genres, although period pieces have a special place in my heart. 80s movies are cool. The more 80sish the better, with an outlandish 80s soundtrack.

Thanks for the support Jerry ;) My school start tomorrow, I'm little nervous but very happy and impatient.
Hope all fine for you ;)
:iconspivak000:
Thats awesome. School is a pain in the ass but well worth the time for learning new art skills. Try hard and do well!
:iconslayingsteel:
awesome work. I see you do a little 3d, what programs do you use?
:iconspivak000:
I've used Maya and ZBrush (awesome program), but for the most part I paint and draw in Corel Painter and Photoshop. It would be nice to get good with Maya eventually. 2d art takes so much of my time though, when I have the time.

Are you going for 3d animation degree right now?
:iconslayingsteel:
yeah it takes alot to get used to using 3d software, there is so much to it. i use maya and some zbrush, i mostly sculpt in mudbox, but i use zbrush for final things, like displacement maps. I use photoshop for digital stuff, i see you use a wacom tablet, i have one too, its like my favorite thing in the world. I want to get my hands on an intuos 4.

Actually i just finished school, i just got my bachelors in 3d.
:iconspivak000:
Instead of the Intuos 4, try and save up for a Cintiq 20" monitor. You can just draw directly onto the screen so its like using paper. They are like 2 grand and up though, so kind of expensive. I want one so badly.

Congratulations on the degree man. Are you interested in 3d animation for gaming? It seems like there are so many different jobs now in games for that degree outside of just animating. Texture artists, riggers, modelers, environment artists. I've been following a lot of the concept art development in the last few years and some of those artists are freakishly talented. Its a tough job to get.

For your 3d major, did you have to pick an emphasis? Or is it just general 3d animation.
:iconslayingsteel:
oh yeah it would be nice to have a cintiq, but i dont mind drawing with a basic tablet, plus i have 2 monitors and one more might be overkill haha.

Im not to into the actual animation part, im more into the modeling, texturing, and lighting/rendering aspects of it. Im not a big fan of rigging. But i did hand animate one thing (without motion capture data) and it was pretty fun, its just something you would have to be really dedicated to. Im more of a traditional artist, so character concept and modeling is more my style. We didnt really have to pick an emphasis for the degree, you get to learn alot of 3d concepts.

Thanks much for the fav Jerry! Long time no talk to you :o How are you? I like when you sends me Notes :DD
:iconspivak000:
Ya its a really vibrant painting. Sorry I haven't talked in a while, school just started up and I have two tough painting classes, plus working a lot too. My life is a nightmare at the moment. Don't worry, I've got more notes for you :)
:icon6noodle9:
Oh cool. Good luck for your painting classes. I'm happy for you.
Mine will start the 1rs october ;)
